# Apophatic theology

## Why it looked like it would break the theory

Apophatic theology describes its subject only through negation. This can look like a distinction whose identity pole can never be positively formed.

## Why it failed

**The counterexample failed** because the method is built from distinctions. Dionysius separates positive from negative theology, each negation marks something off from what remains, and negating the negation operates on the second. A procedure consisting of repeated marking-off is not evidence that marking-off has failed. What is denied is describability by positive predicates, not organization.
