# Gunk: matter with no smallest parts

Mereology & mathematics ·

## Why it looked like it would break the theory

In gunk, every part contains further parts and no smallest unit exists. If part–whole analysis must terminate at a base level, the calculus enters an infinite regress.

## Why it failed

**The counterexample failed** because recursive organization is built into the system pattern. Any part is also an identity and may be taken as a whole with further parts. DSRP requires no smallest part and no terminal level.
