# Strong emergence and trans-ordinal laws

Measurement & self-reference ·

## Why it looked like it would break the theory

Strong emergence claims that some whole-level properties cannot be deduced from the parts, even in principle. This can look like a whole containing something beyond its parts and relationships.

## Why it failed

**The counterexample failed** because failure of deduction is not failure of composition. The emergent property may be unpredictable while the whole remains constituted by its parts and their organization. What changes is organization, not the addition of an unstructured substance.
