# Whether primitive identity is permitted

Mereology & mathematics ·

## Why it looked like it would break the theory

Several cases seem to require an answer to whether identity may be primitive—whether something may simply occupy the identity role without a deeper account of what makes it itself.

## Why it failed

The challenge failed as a counterexample because DSRP does not claim a substantive theory of intrinsic thisness. It specifies the identity–other structure within a distinction. Whether the underlying content is primitive, relational, or intrinsic is a separate question.
