# Whitehead's occasions as partless

Process metaphysics ·

## Why it looked like it would break the theory

Whitehead describes actual occasions as genetically atomic and not assembled from detachable pieces. This can look like an organized whole with no parts.

## Why it failed

**The counterexample failed** because 'part' is not limited to a separable physical object. Phases, stages, aspects, and relations can occupy the part role. Once an occasion is taken as a whole, its internal organization supplies its parts.
