## In authors' words

### What they set out to do (purpose)

This News 12 New Jersey segment documents Green Hills Elementary School’s adoption of a metacognitive teaching approach developed by Derek and Laura Cabrera and described in Thinking at Every Desk. Teachers were trained to help students “think about thinking,” use tools such as ThinkBlocks, and make their reasoning visible rather than simply memorize information or prepare for tests.

### What they found (results)

Teachers and parents reported noticeable changes in how students approached learning. One teacher said ThinkBlocks allowed students to show what they were thinking instead of relying only on tests, while another educator described a “fundamental change” in classroom activity after working with the Cabreras. A parent reported improved vocabulary and less reliance on textbook study and test cramming. School leaders believed that starting with better thinking could eventually lead to better academic and test outcomes.
