### Abstract

No conventional empirical-study abstract. This is a scholarly monograph rather than an article reporting a discrete study. The publisher describes the book as an account of how systems thinking can help address increasing complexity and as an exposition of Critical Systems Thinking and Critical Systems Practice.

### What they set out to do (purpose)

A monograph surveying the development, philosophies, methodologies, and internal divisions of the systems field and advancing Jackson’s own Critical Systems Thinking and Critical Systems Practice position. It is scholarly engagement with DSRP, but it is not an empirical study of DSRP and supplies no direct empirical evidence against the theory.

Rejects DSRP as a way of unifying systems thinking because distinctions, systems, relationships, and perspectives allegedly mean essentially different things within different systems paradigms. The conclusion is philosophical rather than empirical. ### In short

Directly assesses Cabrera et al.’s proposal that four underlying rules—Distinctions, Systems, Relationships, and Perspectives—provide a common structural basis capable of unifying otherwise diverse systems approaches. Jackson rejects that proposal from the standpoint of Critical Systems Thinking, arguing that the four concepts are used differently across systems paradigms and therefore cannot serve as a common rule set. The criticism, however, does not engage DSRP at the level at which the theory is actually defined. DSRP does not define D, S, R, and P by their ordinary or paradigm-specific dictionary meanings; it defines them as formal, paired constructs: identity–other, part–whole, action–reaction, and point–view. Jackson largely substitutes the varying meanings of four familiar words for the theory-defined constructs and then rejects the resulting simplification.

### In more detail

Jackson discusses DSRP as one proposed answer to the longstanding fragmentation of systems thinking. Cabrera et al.’s proposal is that apparently different systems approaches share a deeper organizational grammar composed of Distinctions, Systems, Relationships, and Perspectives. Jackson rejects this possibility because, in his view, these concepts acquire different meanings within different systems paradigms. He argues instead that Critical Systems Thinking must accept and manage paradigm incommensurability.

The central problem with this critique is that it does not address DSRP on its own terms. The theory Jackson is criticizing does not claim that every systems school uses the words *distinction*, *system*, *relationship*, and *perspective* in the same way. It claims that the formally defined structures underlying those labels recur despite differences in vocabulary, methodology, and theoretical tradition. Each rule is defined through two co-implying elements: identity and other for distinctions, part and whole for systems, action and reaction for relationships, and point and view for perspectives. Jackson does not show that these structures disappear or fundamentally change across the paradigms he invokes.

His inference therefore does not follow from the evidence presented. Different uses of a term across disciplines establish semantic and methodological diversity; they do not establish the absence of deeper structural invariants. To refute DSRP on this ground would require showing that the formal structures themselves are incompatible across paradigms, identifying cases that cannot be represented by them, or demonstrating that another account better explains the observed organization. Jackson does none of these.

There is also a circular quality to the argument. Paradigm incommensurability is treated as an established feature of the systems field. A theory proposing common structure across paradigms is then rejected because the paradigms are assumed to be incommensurable. The supposed incommensurability is not independently tested against DSRP; it functions as the premise used to exclude the competing explanation.

This style of reasoning is relevant to Cabrera’s later empirical paper [Critical Thinking: Broken by Design](https://doi.org/10.54120/jost.2025-000004) (Cabrera, 2025), which examines bias built into conventional conceptions of critical thinking. That analysis found systematic normative, negative, and perspectival biases in definitions of critical thinking and argues that similar tendencies extend into traditions such as Critical Systems Thinking. Jackson’s treatment of DSRP is consistent with that concern: the competing theory is evaluated through CST’s pre-existing philosophical commitments while those commitments themselves are not subjected to an equivalent evidentiary burden.

The book also occasionally appeals to the prominence, adoption, or popularity of systems methodologies as reasons for taking them seriously or including them in the field’s canon. Those considerations establish historical influence or practitioner uptake, not scientific validity. Popularity is not evidence that a methodology’s theoretical claims are true. This distinction was subsequently tested directly by Cabrera, Silberman, and Cabrera in [Popularity Without Proof: A Systematic Empirical Review of Systems Thinking Frameworks](https://doi.org/10.54120/jost.2025-000001) (2025), an empirical review of 400 highly cited systems-thinking papers that found no evidence that citation popularity predicts empirical credibility. This creates an uneven standard in Jackson’s treatment: established approaches can receive standing partly because they are established, while DSRP’s explicit structural claim is rejected without an empirical test of that claim.

### Response

Jackson rejects the unification claim on the ground that distinctions, systems, relationships and perspectives mean different things inside different systems paradigms. That is an observation about how four words are used across literatures, not about whether the structures are present, and it is offered without a test. He identifies no phenomenon the four patterns fail to describe, runs no study, reports no measurement, and proposes no observation that would settle the question either way. What remains is a preference for methodological pluralism, argued from authority.

The asymmetry is worth stating plainly. Critical Systems Thinking, which this book advances, was one of eight frameworks examined in a 2025 systematic review of the 400 most cited papers in the field. Two of its fifty most cited articles were empirical, neither of those supported the framework's ontological claim, and its Evidence Influence Score came out at 1 against DSRP's 68: over nineteen thousand citations, largely unsupported by empirical testing. A framework in that condition declining a structural claim on grounds of methodological preference, without testing it, does not decide anything.
