Heterometallic porphyrin dimers show spin-electric coupling coefficients one to four orders of magnitude larger than conventional 2D magnetic systems, letting practical electric fields switch the molecule between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic coupling states.

### In short

The giant magnetoelectric effect is a relationship (electric field controlling spin coupling) that exists only because the two metal centers in the dimer are categorically distinct, so the effect reported is inseparable from that distinction.
