## In authors' words

### What they found (results)

Microtextural and fractal analysis shows framboidal pyrite forms through a three-stage abiotic process (synchronized nucleation, diffusion-limited aggregation producing a fractal core with dimensions 1.7-1.9, then surface-energy-minimizing spherical completion), with the defect-rich core trapping organic matter beneath a protective crystalline outer layer.

## Commentary

### In short

The spherical framboid (whole) forms through nested, scale-dependent sub-processes building outward from a fractal aggregate core to a protective crystalline rim (part/whole hierarchical organization), and settling the debate required drawing a firm boundary between features diagnostic of abiotic self-organization versus biological mediation.
