Rather than being merely useful ways of thinking, these structures are hypothesized to be the atomic elements from which every organized phenomenon emerges, whether in cognition, biology, physics, mathematics, society, or the cosmos.

This is a living scientific evidence compendium: an open, continually evolving collection of independent empirical research, formal theory, mathematical proofs, cross-disciplinary analyses, applications, critiques, and proposed falsifications. Every entry is included because it supports, refines, challenges, or attempts to falsify the theory.

Scientific theories are strengthened not only by evidence that confirms their predictions, but also by surviving attempts to falsify them. This compendium brings both together: independent evidence from researchers who were not testing DSRP and proposed counterexamples evaluated against the formal theory.

One counterexample is enough to falsify O-Theory. Until then, the question remains: do the same four structures organize everything from quantum systems to human thought?

Independent convergence is one of the strongest forms of scientific evidence because researchers arrive at the same conclusion while investigating different questions for different reasons.

The number is not the point. Researchers in different fields, studying different questions with different methods, repeatedly arrived at the same structural predictions—almost always without testing DSRP or using its language.

This is the adversarial half of the compendium. Where the evidence track asks what converges on DSRP, this one asks what would end it: a single organized phenomenon whose structure needs a fifth pattern, a ninth element, or a fifth structural dynamic. It holds written up from candidates across territories, and resolutions — the general answers those cases settle against. Every case is published whether it held or failed, including the ones still open.

Cite this rather than the evidence collection when the point is what survived attack. The two are separate works with separate addresses: one asks what converges on the theory, the other asks what would end it, and a reference to the first does not support a claim about the second. Case and resolution numbers change when the record is revised, so cite a case by its own permanent link rather than by number.

Abstract

External representations are ubiquitous in knowledge work, yet the literature explaining how they support thinking remains fragmented across disciplines, representational forms, and theoretical traditions. This systematic literature review examined three observable domains of the emerging concept of Object-Oriented Thinking (OOT): verbal, visual, and tangible external representations in which mental models, information, and organization are explicitly instantiated. Literature was identified through three complementary discovery domains and subjected to abstract screening, cross-domain characterization, accessibility assessment, and systematic analysis, yielding a validated synthesis corpus of 51 publications. The synthesis identified seven interrelated themes: structured externalization of knowledge; representations as reasoning environments; iterative sensemaking and knowledge construction; human-technology complementarity in knowledge systems; shared representations and distributed knowledge work; embodied and material engagement with representations; and persistent, traceable, and reusable knowledge. Four cross-cutting processes qualified these themes: representational fit and alignment; scaffolding, facilitation, and representational competence; domain and contextual knowledge; and representational integration and coherence. Across the corpus, a consistent pattern emerged: externalization alone was not the central contribution. External representations became consequential when information and relationships were organized into structures that could be inspected, manipulated, reasoned with, revised, coordinated, and preserved. Their effects varied with representational structure, task, user, context, and integration. The evidence base was conceptually convergent but methodologically heterogeneous and unevenly distributed across disciplines and representational forms, limiting stronger causal and comparative inference. The review does not establish OOT as a validated theoretical construct. It does, however, show that the phenomena encompassed by its operational definition are supported by a substantial and interconnected literature. By integrating that literature, the review provides an evidence-based account of structured external representation and a foundation for investigating more precisely what is made explicit, how it is organized, and what value arises from making thought externally available for continued knowledge activity.

What they set out to do (purpose)

A systematic literature review establishing the current state of knowledge on verbal, visual, and tangible external representations in which mental models, information, and organization are explicitly instantiated. The review deliberately searched adjacent literatures using discipline-established vocabulary rather than DSRP or OOT terminology.

What they found (results)

From 136,049 initial records, screening and cross-domain characterization produced a validated corpus of 51 publications spanning seven disciplines (Computer Science 26; Education 14; Psychology 4; Business 3; Engineering 2; Chemistry and Geography 1 each), 62.7 per cent of them empirical. Synthesis produced seven themes and four cross-cutting principles, with 145 validated theme assignments. Coffman concludes that externalization alone was not the central contribution: external representations became consequential when information and relationships were organized into structures that could be inspected, manipulated, reasoned with, revised, coordinated, and preserved. Effects were conditional on representational fit, competence, domain knowledge, and integration rather than automatic. She states explicitly that the review does not establish OOT as a validated theoretical construct.

Commentary

In short

Our reading: this is the corpus, not the test. Its bearing on DSRP is that it was assembled outside DSRP and OOT vocabulary, which is what makes it usable as an independent body of evidence in the companion secondary analysis (Coffman and Cabrera 2026). Filed as engagement rather than independent because the review was explicitly motivated by OOT and run on the Cabreras' Systems Literature Review Protocol for Humans Supported by AI. The synthesis language is DSRP-adjacent on its face – organized structures, relationships, categories, compared perspectives – but the review itself makes no DSRP claim and codes no Patterns.

Method: SLR Protocol for Humans Supported by AI, five phases, with AI performing search-strategy refinement, abstract evaluation, structured extraction, and evidence synthesis under human decision rules and verification. Three search vectors: visual (V1), physical/tangible (V2), organizational/verbal (V3). Selection: 136,049 records to 704 after search-string development, to 310 after abstract screening, to 128 after cross-vector characterization, to 64 after full-text accessibility (64 inaccessible), to 51 after corpus validation. The load-bearing synthesis sentence: "External representations become consequential not because they exist outside the individual, but because they organize knowledge into structures that can participate in reasoning, support progressive refinement, coordinate distributed activity, preserve developmental context, and enable complementary interaction between humans and technologies." Limitation the author names: the corpus is concentrated in visual representations and educational and computational settings, and 64 relevant papers could not be retrieved in full text.

Response

The corpus rather than the test. From 136,049 records, screening produced 51 publications across seven disciplines, assembled deliberately outside DSRP and OOT vocabulary. That independence is what makes it usable as evidence in the companion secondary analysis, and the review itself declines to validate the construct.
