## In authors' words

### Abstract

Ocean fronts, as typical marine phenomena, significantly impact the marine environment and the distribution of organisms. However, the research on their tilted structure is limited. This study considered the frontal slope as a key parameter for describing the tilting characteristics of ocean fronts.

### What they set out to do (purpose)

To develop and validate a new quantitative parameter, frontal slope, for characterizing the tilted boundary structure of ocean fronts between adjacent water masses.

### Who or what was studied (sample)

Global three-dimensional oceanographic data covering multiple front types, including marginal ice zone fronts, upwelling fronts, and estuarine plume fronts.

### How they did it (methods)

Definition of frontal slope as the ratio of depth difference to horizontal distance of same-type seawater across a front, validated with a mathematical model relating slope to velocity shear and density differences, then applied to extract slopes globally.

### What they found (results)

Frontal slope varies systematically by front type, with marginal ice zone fronts showing the steepest slopes, greater than 1.5 m/km, and upwelling and estuarine plume fronts showing much gentler slopes, less than 1 m/km, with slope driven by velocity shear and density variation between adjacent water masses.

## Commentary

### In short

The finding shows the Distinctions pattern because an ocean front is a boundary separating two water-mass categories, and the Relationships pattern because the tilt of that boundary is explained as an outcome of the coupling between velocity shear and density contrast across the two masses.
