## In authors' words

### What they set out to do (purpose)

To explain, for practitioners, why systems mapping is worth doing, when to do it, and how, and to survey the mapping tools the author uses in consulting work.

### How they did it (methods)

A consultancy blog post in Portuguese. Resck sets out four capabilities that mapping ability consists of, then reviews the software he uses, Plectica among them, with the limits of each and of maps generally.

### What they found (results)

Resck names Kumu as the tool he uses most, and reports that he likes Plectica for drawing processes and workshop flows, writing that 'esse software oferece algumas coisas que nenhum outro possui' and that the free plan, despite its space limits, is enough to see what sets it apart. He acknowledges throughout that maps are limited models of the systems they represent.

## Commentary

### In short

A Brazilian consultancy's practitioner guide to systems mapping that sets out the four DSRP operations as what mapping ability consists of, and identifies Plectica as the tool built on the framework.

### In more detail

Resck opens the methodological part of the post with four capabilities, given as a list: 'Fazer distinções entre ideias,' 'Organizar ideias em sistemas compostos de partes e todos,' 'Identificar relações entre ideias,' and 'Ter múltiplas perspectivas sobre qualquer ideia.' These are the four patterns in Portuguese, with the part-and-whole pair stated explicitly in the second, though Resck does not label the list as DSRP at that point. The attribution comes later, in the tool survey: 'O Plectica é um software de mapeamento alinhado com o framework DSRP desenvolvido pelo Derek,' and 'O Plectica é um software relativamente novo e é desenvolvido pelo Cabrera Lab.' He reports using Plectica for processes and workshop flows and credits it with features no other tool has, while naming Kumu as his own most-used tool. On Cabrera himself he writes: 'O Derek Cabrera é um personagem controverso e oferece várias críticas relevantes a algumas modinhas do pensamento sistêmico' — a controversial figure who offers relevant criticisms of some systems-thinking fads. He does not define the four patterns, elaborate the framework, or raise any objection to its content.

### Response

The four operations Resck lists are the four patterns stated correctly, including the part-and-whole pair, and his identification of Plectica as built on the framework is accurate. He leaves the connection implicit: the list of capabilities and the naming of DSRP sit in different sections, so a reader does not learn from this post that the four operations he opens with are the framework he later names.
