Broken by Design — Diagnosing the Flaws in Our Most Trusted Cognitive Tool

Cabrera D, Journal of Systems Thinking, 2025

## Abstract

This study began with a provocative social media post: “Critical thinking is just a form of bias. Why start every situation with a negative filter?” The post sparked intense debate, raising a fundamental question: What is critical thinking, really? To explore this, we conducted a structured content analysis of 100 real-world definitions of critical thinking from academic, educational, and professional sources. Each was coded for three characteristics reflecting our hypotheses: (1) negativity (critique, judgment, evaluation), (2) normativity (prescriptive standards for “good” thinking), and (3) perspectival bias (value-laden framing or observer-imposed filtering). The findings were decisive: 43% of definitions emphasized negative cognitive operations, 100% were normatively prescriptive, and 52% exhibited perspectival bias. All three effects were statistically and empirically supported. These results challenge the widespread belief that critical thinking is neutral, constructive, or objective. Instead, CT often functions as a normative lens—shaping perception, guiding judgment, and framing reality. This evaluative posture also permeates related fields such as critical systems thinking and critical theory, which often begin not with description but with suspicion: the presumption that something is broken or needs to be fixed. In response, we offer a structural alternative grounded in systems thinking: DSRP theory and the Love Reality Loop (LRL). These frameworks emphasize descriptive accuracy, perspectival awareness, and structural coherence over critique or judgment. They support an epistemology rooted in seeing clearly, not merely thinking critically—an approach better suited to modeling complex realities than to policing them.
