The Universal & Atomic Elements of Organization
A falsifiable scientific theory proposing that the same irreducible structures organize both thought and reality — from the quantum to the social scale.
O-Theory proposes that four irreducible structures — Distinctions, Systems, Relationships and Perspectives (DSRP) — form the universal grammar of organization. Rather than being merely useful ways of thinking, these structures are hypothesized to be the atomic elements from which every organized phenomenon emerges, whether in cognition, biology, physics, mathematics, society, or the cosmos.

This is a living scientific evidence compendium: an open, continually evolving collection of independent empirical research, formal theory, mathematical proofs, cross-disciplinary analyses, applications, critiques, and proposed falsifications. Every entry is included because it supports, refines, challenges, or attempts to falsify the theory.
Scientific theories are strengthened not only by evidence that confirms their predictions, but also by surviving attempts to falsify them. This compendium brings both together: independent evidence from researchers who were not testing DSRP and proposed counterexamples evaluated against the formal theory.
One counterexample is enough to falsify O-Theory. Until then, the question remains: do the same four structures organize everything from quantum systems to human thought?
Independent convergence is one of the strongest forms of scientific evidence because researchers arrive at the same conclusion while investigating different questions for different reasons.
The number is not the point. Researchers in different fields, studying different questions with different methods, repeatedly arrived at the same structural predictions—almost always without testing DSRP or using its language.

That paper is the peer-reviewed foundation. What you see here is its living, continuously updated version . New studies are checked before they are added, and the collection now holds and keeps growing. The collection is updated continuously, so the citation carries the date you consulted it rather than a study count — the count changes weekly, and putting it in the reference would make the same collection look like a different work to everyone who cites it. To cite a single claim or study, use its own address: every one has a permanent link.
This is the adversarial half of the compendium. Where the evidence track asks what converges on DSRP, this one asks what would end it: a single organized phenomenon whose structure needs a fifth pattern, a ninth element, or a fifth structural dynamic. It holds written up from candidates across territories, and resolutions — the general answers those cases settle against. Every case is published whether it held or failed, including the ones still open.
Cite this rather than the evidence collection when the point is what survived attack. The two are separate works with separate addresses: one asks what converges on the theory, the other asks what would end it, and a reference to the first does not support a claim about the second. Case and resolution numbers change when the record is revised, so cite a case by its own permanent link rather than by number.

Management literature is full of four-box models. Most are prescriptions dressed as descriptions: here are the things well-run organizations do, arranged so they are easy to remember. They cannot be wrong, because an organization missing one is simply judged to be doing badly. They are derived by looking at organizations that succeeded and describing what those had in common, which guarantees a fit — the failures were never in the sample. Most state no hypothesis, offer no condition under which they would be abandoned, and never receive a formal statement at all. Adoption is what they are judged on.
This is a different kind of claim, and it starts somewhere else. Not with what good organizations do, but with what adaptivity is.
An organization is adaptive when the mental models its parts hold in common converge on how the world is actually organized. That is the same alignment that governs a single mind — the Love–Reality Loop — running one level up, with sharedness across parts in place of a single model. Culture is not a mood or a set of values on a wall. It is the shared model (ℂ = 𝕄α), and its distance from reality is what determines whether the organization can adjust when the world moves.
Vision, Mission, Capacity and Learning are what that shared model is a model of. The state the system moves toward. What it repeatedly does to get there. The structure that makes the doing possible. The updating that reorganizes all three. Four attractors, and the further claim is that there is no fifth.
And an attractor is not a sentence. Every organization has a vision statement; few know what their actual vision is. The attractor is 𝕄α — what the agents hold in common, which is a different object from what is written on the wall and can be measured separately from it. This is where most of the field goes wrong. Treating the statement as the thing is why a company with an excellent vision statement can fail to move, and why the literature has no account of it beyond execution and culture as afterthoughts.
Which raises what counts as an adaptive organization at all. The test is one observation: deliver the same stimulus twice and see whether the response is the same. Kick a rock three times and it answers identically every time — its parts coordinate, but nothing updates. Kick a dog three times and the responses differ, because the model changed between kicks. That change is learning, and a system that does it is in scope.
That scope is much wider than firms. Any system that persists by adjusting — a school district, an army, a colony, an immune system, a cell. That sounds like a stretch until the attractors are stated structurally rather than in management language. An amoeba has no vision statement. It has a chemical state it moves toward, chemotaxis to get there, receptors and pseudopods that make the moving possible, and adaptation when the gradient shifts. Four attractors, no meetings.
An organization (s) is adaptive when the models its parts hold in common — culture (ℂ) — converge on how the world is actually organized (ℝ). Culture is the mental model (𝕄) multiplied by how widely it is shared across the parts (α), so ℂ = 𝕄α. Adaptivity is not a property the system has but a direction it moves: over time (limₜ → ∞) the ratio ℂ/ℝ approaches 1. And the shared models doing the converging are four and only four — the attractors (𝒜): the state the system moves toward (𝒜ᵥ), what it repeatedly does to get there (𝒜ₘ), the structure that makes the doing possible (𝒜ᶜ), and the updating that reorganizes all three (𝒜ₗ).
Read in symbols: a system is adaptive if and only if (≡) the ratio of its shared model (ℂ) to reality (ℝ) tends to 1 as time runs on, and the set of attractors it holds (𝒜(s)) is exactly those four. The three-bar sign is identity, not resemblance. Equality on the attractor set rather than inclusion is doing work: inclusion would leave room for a fifth.
Whether something is an adaptive organization at all is settled by one observable. Deliver the same stimulus twice and see whether the response is the same. A rock returns the same answer forever — its parts coordinate, but no model updates. A dog does not, because 𝕄 changed between kicks. That change is individual learning (Lᵢ = Δ𝕄); shared across parts it is organizational learning (Lₒ = Δ𝕄α).
Either adaptivity is something other than a shared model (ℂ) converging on reality (ℝ), or the four attractors are not the whole set (𝒜).
Read in symbols: the identity fails if ℂₜ/ℝ tending to 1 is not what adaptivity is — a system whose shared model tracks reality and still cannot adapt, or one that adapts while ℂ stays fixed or drifts from ℝ. The completeness fails if there exists (∃) some system s whose attractor set (𝒜(s)) is not exactly those four — a fifth attractor none of the four covers, or one of the four genuinely absent while the system adapts anyway.
None of this work tests the claim. It states the model, applies it, or supports the foundation it rests on. That is the finding.
Two are external. A peer-reviewed operations journal applying systems thinking models of organizational design and change in community operational research, outside this lab's venues. An independent doctoral dissertation using the framework on organizational capacity failures in education policy. Both show people with no stake in the theory finding it usable on real systems. Neither asked whether adaptivity is the shared model converging on reality, and neither looked for a fifth attractor.
Seven are named organizations: a conglomerate's transformation for the digital industrial era, a software company's founding logic recovered as structure, a bank's failure read as structural rather than moral, a school district, a university's pandemic response, an air force's career field management, a human rights organization. Each shows the four attractors doing diagnostic work — and the bank is the one worth reading, because it is the failure case. A model that only ever gets pointed at successes explains nothing. Still, none of the seven was selected without regard to whether the model fits, and nothing was recorded in advance about what a failed diagnosis would look like. That is what separates an application from a test.
Two are the foundation and are themselves tested: that understanding is the product of information and organization, and that the individual alignment loop works as described. The formal statement derives the four attractors on shared mental models and shows the adaptivity condition to be the same equation as that individual loop, one level up. It is a derivation and says so, naming simulation and empirical work as still to come.
So the evidence runs from a tested law, through a derivation, to a set of applications — and stops short of the claim itself. More research is needed.
