# What is bias (B)?

## The research claim

The catalogue of cognitive biases runs to two hundred entries and grows. Confirmation bias, anchoring, availability, sunk cost, fundamental attribution error, framing effects, base rate neglect. Each was discovered separately, named separately, and is taught as a separate thing to watch out for. Nobody claims they share a mechanism, and the standard explanation is that the mind uses heuristics which are efficient and sometimes wrong. Reality runs the whole calculus. Every distinction has its other, every part its whole, every action its reaction, every point its view, and all of it at once, all the time. Nothing in reality is partial. Minds run a fraction of it. Given the same structure available, people use a small part: they break things into parts and connect them constantly, and rarely name the whole they built or take an explicit point of view. The usage is not merely uneven — it follows a power law. Bias is that gap. Not a list of two hundred failures but one failure with a shape: the organization reality has, minus the organization a mind actually uses. The shape is specified at element level, not just at pattern level. Distinctions dominate systems, which dominate relationships, which dominate perspectives. And within each pattern the same skew runs again: identity over other, part over whole, general relating over action and reaction specifically, view over point. Eight elements, and the same half goes missing each time. Read that way, the catalogued biases stop being unrelated. Confirmation bias is a point of view held fixed while information is filtered through it. Anchoring is a relationship left unexamined. Fundamental attribution error is a perspective not taken. Framing effects are a context never made explicit. They are the same omission at different addresses in the structure. This is also why bias does not yield to more information. The gap is in O, and information enters through whatever organization is already there — which is why supplying facts to someone with a badly organized model can leave them more confident and no closer to reality.

## What would confirm it

Bias is the difference between the organization reality has and the organization a mind actually uses. One gap, not two hundred separate defects — and the gap has a measurable shape. Read in symbols: bias (B) is the organization present in reality (O_ℝ) minus the organization a mental model employs (O_𝕄). Reality manifests the calculus completely; a mind manifests part of it. The subtraction is what every named bias is a local instance of, and the distribution of what gets omitted is not random — it follows a power law, with a few moves made constantly and the rest almost never.

## What would refute it

Bias is something other than structural omission — separate heuristics with separate mechanisms, as the catalogue assumes. Or the omissions are random rather than patterned. Read in symbols: bias (B) is not identical to the difference between reality's organization and the model's, or the omissions have no structure. The second disjunct is the sharper test. If people leave out structure at random, there is no single account to give and the two hundred entries are two hundred things. A power law says otherwise, and a flat distribution would refute it.

## The evidence, and why this status

If understanding is information times organization, then a shortfall in organization is a real quantity with real consequences — not a figure of speech about people being closed-minded. That makes bias one thing with a shape rather than a catalogue of separate errors, and it makes the shape measurable. The central measurement is observational, and its result is the part nobody could have arranged. Tens of thousands of people used a structural mapping tool with no instruction at all. Nearly half took no structural action. Among the rest, the omissions were not scattered — the same moves went missing, in the same order, following a power law the calculus does not contain and nobody predicted. A capacity limit would produce scatter. This is patterned. An independent replication on a different sample by a different method found the predicted omissions in written language. Several experiments then show the shape of a single omission close up. Asked which of five items are not a red circle, people negate one part at a time, in order of how many parts each option negates — a graded structure, not a random error. Context and priming move judgment without anyone noticing. Perspective rewrites what an object is. Structure gets supplied where the stimulus contains none. One study is bias at scale with an answer key: given solutions drawn from an independently established web of causes, people searched for the single one that works rather than judging them all worth doing. And one examines the incumbent construct built to correct bias, showing that it omits organization — which is why more of it does not close this gap.
