# Can people become more mentally fit?

## The research claim

Whether thinking can be improved is an old argument with a discouraging record. Intelligence is largely stable. Brain training transfers to the trained task and almost nothing else. Critical thinking courses produce students who perform better on critical thinking tests. The honest summary of a century of work is that general cognitive improvement has been hard to demonstrate. If what limits adaptivity is unused structure rather than raw capacity, then improvement is not a matter of expanding a fixed resource. It is a matter of using what is already available. The moves people rarely make — naming the whole, taking an explicit point of view, distinguishing inside one — are not difficult moves. They are unmade moves. This predicts something the general-improvement literature does not: that gains should come quickly and from small interventions, because nothing is being built. Something already present is being brought into use.

## What would confirm it

Mental fitness can increase. The capacity to build and revise models that stay aligned with a situation is trainable, not fixed. Read in symbols: the change in fitness (ΔF) is greater than zero. The claim is modest in form and specific in content — not that everyone improves, or that improvement is unlimited, but that the quantity moves at all in response to intervention. A fixed trait would not move.

## What would refute it

Mental fitness cannot be increased. Whatever is being measured is a stable trait, and interventions move it no more than practice on the test itself would. Read in symbols: the change in fitness (ΔF) is less than or equal to zero. The serious version of this null is not that nothing changes but that nothing changes beyond familiarity with the measure — which is the standard finding for most cognitive training and is what any claim here has to beat.

## The evidence, and why this status

Two independent results say the measure moves, and the second is the one that matters, because it was not run by this lab. The core evidence isolates one pattern at a time. Four treatments, the same subjects measured before and after, and the complexity of what they produced rose in every case. Read-time data shows the exposures ran under three minutes, which makes the effect harder to explain away rather than easier — three minutes is too short for anything but noticing. The replication is a policy classroom: different population, different material, same direction, different investigators. Under both sits a baseline measured separately, which is what makes the size of the available gain interpretable. Most people leave most of the structure unused, so the room for improvement is not at the ceiling of capacity. It is in moves nobody is making. That also explains the speed: nothing is being built, something already present is being brought into use, and that predicts exactly the quick, small-dose effects observed. The instrument the change is measured on was validated separately, before being used to detect change — which matters, because an instrument built to show movement would show it. The remaining entries are the applied record: the protocol as delivered, the classroom version, a documentary of the school work. Extensive, consistent with the measured results, and uncontrolled.
