# Does improving mental fitness improve outcomes?

## The research claim

This is the question everything else is for. A measure can move, an intervention can work, and none of it matters if the person's life is unchanged. The history of cognitive training is largely a history of gains that stayed inside the training. The argument that it should is not that better thinkers do better generally. It is specific: outcomes depend on whether a model matches the situation, and structural omissions are what make models fail to match. A plan that never named the whole, an argument that never took the other point of view, a policy built from parts with no relations traced — those fail in the world, and they fail because of what was missing from the structure. Which makes the prediction narrower than a general claim about intelligence. Improvement should show up wherever adaptivity is what determines the outcome, and should show up much less where it is not. Someone whose job is executing a fixed procedure well should gain little.

## What would confirm it

Improving mental fitness improves real outcomes — in the places where outcomes depend on adapting rather than on executing. Read in symbols: an increase in fitness (ΔF > 0) implies (⇒) an improvement in outcomes in domain d (ΔY_d > 0), for those domains where the outcome depends on model-to-reality alignment. The restriction is part of the claim rather than an escape from it: naming in advance where the effect should not appear is what keeps it from being unfalsifiable.

## What would refute it

Fitness gains stay inside the training. The measure moves and nothing in the person's work, decisions, or results changes. Read in symbols: fitness increases and (∧) outcomes do not. This is the standard finding for cognitive training and it is the honest default expectation. Any claim to the contrary has to be demonstrated, not assumed from the fact that a score improved.

## The evidence, and why this status

None of this work measures a fitness gain and an outcome in the same people. That is the whole gap, and everything below sits on one side of it or the other. On one side, interventions that move the measure. On the other, settings where the structure was applied and things went better — a policy program, a university's pandemic response, a school district, a cybersecurity analysis, two decades of organizational work. Both sides point the same direction. Neither contains the other. One study comes closest to closing it, and why it does not is the useful part. The causal structure of a public problem was established independently, and people's judgments about what would work were then measured against it. What they endorsed tracked how they had organized the problem rather than what the problem contained. That is structural quality predicting a judgment against an external answer key — one step short of predicting a result, because a judgment is not yet an outcome. The applied record is large and almost entirely unwritten. Hundreds of school implementations, named companies, a documentary. What is missing is not the work; it is the measurement of the same people twice. Inferring across two literatures is exactly how cognitive training claims have gone wrong for a century: gains in the trained task, outcomes attributed afterward, and no study containing both. The evidence here is arranged so that the missing study is obvious rather than hidden.
