# What is mental fitness (F)?

## The research claim

Intelligence is usually measured as performance on narrow analytic tasks, summarized as g and reported as IQ. It predicts training and job performance across large meta-analytic literatures, and it is worth keeping. The problem is a scope error: g is general within the family of standardized cognitive tests that produce it, and gets treated as though general across tests meant general across life. Mental fitness is the capacity for adaptivity — the cross-domain readiness that makes intelligent performance more likely and more robust as conditions change. Intelligence is what that capacity looks like when expressed in a real situation. The two are related and not identical: fitness is upstream. Three things follow, and each is a specific commitment rather than a framing. Capability and expression are different quantities. A person can be able to organize well and unable to do it in the moment, because emotional, motivational, or physical state is binding. Written out, the organization actually available is the organization a person is capable of, multiplied by a gate that their current state sets: O_eff(t) = O_cap · g_EMP(t). Most real failures live in that gap, and treating them as low intelligence sends the wrong intervention. Whole-person functioning is governed by the weakest of four coupled domains — cognitive, emotional, motivational, physical — not by their average. Improving a domain that is not the limiter changes nothing. Compensation is possible and finite: cognition can override fatigue for a while, motivation can override the body for a while, and each one accrues a cost. Those costs do not disappear. A cost that is real but absent from the model guiding action is otherized, and otherized costs return later as constraints — skipped recovery becoming injury, suppressed conflict becoming rupture, chronic override becoming burnout. This is why people look fine until they do not, and it is why the account pairs a state measure with a trajectory measure rather than reporting one number. And what improves fitness is mostly organization rather than information. Adding facts to a badly organized model gets them absorbed into the wrong structure, which can raise confidence while lowering alignment.

## What would confirm it

Mental fitness is your capacity to stay aligned with a situation as it changes. At any moment it is set by your weakest domain, not your average. What you can actually organize right now is what you are capable of, scaled down by whatever your state permits. And what improves it is mostly reorganization, not more information. Read in symbols: current fitness at time t (F(t)) is the minimum (min) across four domains d — cognitive, emotional, motivational, physical — of how well each is fitted to reality at that moment (A_d(t)). Effective organization (O_eff(t)) is organizational capability (O_cap) multiplied by a state gate (g_EMP(t)) between 0 and 1. And change in fitness (ΔF) comes primarily from change in organization (ΔO). The minimum is doing the work in two places: the gate is itself the minimum of the three non-cognitive domains, so a single binding constraint closes it.

## What would refute it

Fitness is an average rather than a limiter. Or capability is expressed regardless of state. Or fitness improves mainly by acquiring information. Read in symbols: fitness is the mean across domains rather than the minimum, or effective organization simply equals capability with no gate, or change in fitness comes primarily from change in information (ΔI). Each is a live alternative and each is the ordinary assumption somewhere. Most assessment averages. Most training adds information. Most explanations of a bad decision reach for capability rather than state.

## The evidence, and why this status

The strongest evidence here is not from this lab, and it was not looking for this construct. A citation-weighted systematic review of highly cited studies across psychology, neuroscience, education, health and performance coded four framing elements under dictionaries frozen before analysis. All four appeared in almost every study, and the great majority carried all four at once. Nobody proposed them as a unit. The field arrived at them separately and never named them together, which is a different kind of evidence from a confirmation — it is a convergence that could not have been arranged from here. The same review found the opposite picture on measurement: several distinct modes with no dominant standard, and the fragmentation survives both a strict and a permissive threshold. A field that agrees on what it is studying and cannot agree on how to measure it is at a particular stage of maturity, and it needs a change-sensitive metric. That is a finding about the field rather than a preference. Two further findings support parts of the account from underneath. Understanding is the product of information and organization, so adding facts to a badly organized model does not help. And people leave specific structure unused in a patterned way, measured at scale, which is what the training targets. What is not here is a test of the distinctive commitments — that functioning tracks the weakest domain rather than the average, that capability fails to express when a non-cognitive constraint binds, that unmodelled costs return on a trajectory. The papers say so directly: no validated domain panels, no population norms, no coupling model. The instrument work covers the cognitive term only.
