# Does awareness of organization (O) increase mental fitness?

## The research claim

Metacognition is usually taught as a habit — plan, monitor, reflect, check your reasoning. It helps, modestly, and the effect is hard to separate from paying more attention in general. What is rarely specified is metacognition **of what**: what exactly is the thinker supposed to be watching. The answer here is specific. What a thinker watches is the structure: which distinctions are being made, what is being treated as part of what, what is related to what, and from what point of view. Neurons watching other neurons, and what they are watching for is named in advance. This makes awareness an intervention rather than a disposition. If the gap is unused structure, then seeing the structure is the first thing that closes it — you cannot use a move you cannot see you are not making. But awareness is not the whole of it, and the account says so plainly. Knowing about a skill is not having one. Awareness makes the move visible and available; it does not make it fast, automatic, or reliable under pressure. That is the second mechanism, and it is a separate question.

## What would confirm it

Being made aware of the structure you are and are not using increases mental fitness on its own, before any practice. Read in symbols: metacognition of organization — attending to the structure of one's own thinking — produces an increase in fitness (ΔF > 0). The claim is about awareness in isolation. It does not say awareness is sufficient for skill, only that it moves the measure by itself.

## What would refute it

Awareness of structure produces no gain beyond what an equally engaging activity would produce. Read in symbols: it is not the case (¬) that metacognition of organization produces an increase in fitness. The comparison matters: general metacognitive instruction produces small effects, so the claim has to beat attention and engagement rather than beat nothing.

## The evidence, and why this status

This is the one training claim where the design does the separating, which is why the evidence is clean. The core study primes one pattern, measures what people produce before and after, and adds nothing else — no practice, no feedback, no content. Whatever moved cannot be attributed to rehearsal or to information, because neither was supplied. That is what makes this evidence about awareness rather than about training in general. A second study replicates it in a policy classroom with different material and different investigators. Two further findings tell you what the intervention is acting on. One measures the specific moves people fail to make when nobody prompts them, which is the baseline the effect is measured against. The other is an independent replication of that same omission pattern on a different sample by a different method — network analysis of written language. That matters here more than it looks: the thing awareness corrects has now been found by someone outside this work, so the target is not an artifact of one tool. The remaining entries specify what is being increased and supply the instrument. Small set, but the pieces fit: an omission established twice by different methods, an intervention that adds nothing but attention to it, and a measured change in both a laboratory and a classroom.
