# Does practice in organization (O) increase mental fitness?

## The research claim

Awareness is not skill. Knowing that you should name the whole you have just built does not make you name it when you are tired, arguing, or under a deadline. Anyone who has learned anything physical knows the distinction, and it applies here without modification. What gets practised is specific, and it has a structure. Below the level of any framework sit the four patterns, and between them and full frameworks sit what have been called moves: content-free structures that can be combined and recombined into models built for the problem rather than models the problem gets forced into. Two hundred and four are catalogued so far, and most of them are already universal — an analogy is a move, so are a metaphor, a simile, a list, a table, a graph. They were not invented. They were in use for millennia and then identified. The Six Moves are the subset that the Pareto finding singled out: of everything available, these six are where the missing structure concentrates. Practising them is the cheapest available correction to a measured bias. What practice is up against is worth naming, because it explains why awareness alone reverts. The brain runs the four patterns already, but in fast mode, which is quick and error-prone. On top of that sits decades of training that rewarded memorization, linear causation, and tidy answers — Linear, Anthropocentric, Mechanistic, Ordered. Practice is not adding a skill to a blank surface. It is cutting a new path across a hillside worn smooth by evolution and schooling, and the first few passes feel wrong. Which is why both mechanisms are necessary and each fails alone in a characteristic way. Awareness without practice leaves someone who can describe the move and does not make it. Practice without awareness reverts — the way a diet reverts, where behaviour changes for months, the model of food never does, and the weight comes back with the model intact. The endpoint of practice is not effortful correctness. It is structure that runs fast and runs right, which is a third thing from either intuition or deliberation.

## What would confirm it

Practice adds something awareness does not. Repetition makes the structural moves faster, more available, and more likely to happen when conditions are bad — and the combination produces more than awareness on its own. Read in symbols: metacognition of organization plus practice of it produces a gain in fitness greater than metacognition alone produces. The comparison is the claim. It is not enough for the combination to work; it has to beat the awareness half, or practice is adding nothing.

## What would refute it

Practice adds nothing beyond awareness. Whatever gain appears after training is the awareness component, and the repetition is doing no work. Read in symbols: the gain from metacognition plus practice is less than or equal to the gain from metacognition alone. This is a real possibility rather than a formality — a three-minute exposure already moves the measure, and it is entirely possible that everything the longer programs achieve was achieved in the first three minutes.

## The evidence, and why this status

None of this work isolates practice from awareness. That is the state of the evidence, and everything below has to be read against it. Every program that includes practice also includes awareness, so every reported gain is attributable to either or both. The awareness component has been isolated and works. The practice component is confounded in every study, without exception. What the record does contain is a specification of what practice consists of, which most training claims never reach. Content-free structures are catalogued, and a subset was singled out by a measured distribution as where the missing structure concentrates — so the target was diagnosed before the training was designed, rather than proposed and then justified. That makes the claim about particular operations rather than about effort in general. Beyond that is field experience and a great deal of it. Two decades of workshops, classrooms and organizations, with practitioners consistently reporting that repetition is what makes the moves automatic. Consistent, unblinded, uncontrolled. The reason to take the claim seriously anyway comes from one of the other findings. A three-minute exposure already moves the measure. If awareness that brief does that much, whatever the longer programs add has to be something else, and repetition to automaticity is the obvious candidate. That is an inference from the shape of the evidence, not a result. The instrument a dismantling study would use already exists. What is missing is the study.
