# R4. Boundaries and part–whole assignments change with perspective, scale, and relationships

Do fuzzy boundaries, alternate decompositions, or apparent non-transitivity break DSRP?

## Short answer

No. Boundaries become fuzzy and leaky, or determinate and closed, as perspective, part–whole systems (scale), and relationships change. Before calling a contradiction, verify that the DSRP structure remained constant throughout the argument.

## Complete explanation

A boundary is not a fixed property isolated from the rest of organization. It is an emergent manifestation of Distinctions, Systems, Relationships, and Perspectives. Changing the point of view, moving up or down a part–whole hierarchy, changing the system boundary, or revealing additional relationships—including temporal relationships—can make the same boundary appear sharper, fuzzier, more open, or more closed. The same applies to decomposition and parthood. A hand-clap may be part of applause while a hand is not counted as a part of applause at that grain; the identity of the system and the containment relation have changed. Likewise, two gauge decompositions or biological individuations may each be valid within their own fixed frame. Before asking “Does this break DSRP?” ask: “Has the DSRP structure remained constant throughout the argument?” If the distinction, system, relationship, perspective, scale, target, or context changed, propositions from the different structures cannot be treated as though they were generated by one unchanged structure.

## Why the apparent counterexample arises

The apparent difficulty arises because an argument silently changes a boundary, grain, decomposition, relationship, perspective, or context while preserving the same words. The resulting structures are then compared as if nothing changed.
