# R7. Parts Need Not Be Independently Specifiable

On Systems

Must parts be independently specifiable, separable, or numerically distinct?

## Short answer

A system can have parts that cannot be fully described alone, and a thing may even contain itself. Dependence or self-containment does not erase part–whole structure.

## Complete explanation

Mutual containment. Each pole of a pair contains and defines the other: e⁺ ∈ e⁻ and e⁻ ∈ e⁺. So the whole is in the part as the part is in the whole, and independent specifiability is not merely unrequired — it is ruled out. Specify the part completely and you have already specified the whole, because the whole is contained in it. This concerns complete specification, not description. A wheel can be described without mentioning bicycles; that description is simply partial, short by exactly what the whole contributes. The objection needs the stronger claim — that a part can be specified in full with no reference to its whole — and that is what the mechanics forbid. The identity "dog" is shaped by the boundary of "not-dog", and the reverse. The System pattern adds nothing to this. S := p ↔ w through contains/belongs requires only that the whole contains the parts and the parts belong to the whole. It does not require independent, separable, individually specifiable, or numerically distinct p and w states, and a thing may contain itself. The objection imports a requirement the calculus never carried and the mechanics forbid.

## Why the apparent counterexample arises

The apparent difficulty arises because parts are assumed to be independently specifiable, separable, numerically distinct entities. DSRP requires only the contains/belongs structure (S := p ↔ w); entanglement, self-containing sets, and other dependent part–whole organizations preserve that structure without requiring an additional primitive.
