# A global atmospheric methane record from a tropical ice core

The same global methane signal reads differently depending on where on Earth it is sampled (Pvp); reconciling a tropical vantage point with the polar record required recognizing tropical wetlands as a distinct (D) , previously underweighted part (S) of the global source budget.

## What they found (results)

A 2,000-year ice core from Nevado Huascarán (Peru) yielded the first tropical atmospheric methane record, running higher than but broadly tracking polar ice-core records, with isotopic signatures pointing to tropical wetlands (Amazon, Asia) as the dominant pre-industrial source that polar-only records had underestimated.
