# Being Certain in Systems Thinking: DSRP — A Critical Appraisal of Cabrera's 'DSRP as Universal Ontology' (Discussion Draft)

James Paterson, 2026, J Paterson (Substack newsletter), September 10, 2026 — Philosophy

## In short

Responses to Paterson's criticisms:

1. **“DSRP can redescribe anything.” Unsupported.** DSRP-484 is a finite, constrained calculus—not four vague categories. It specifies Patterns, elements, dynamics, composition rules, residual criteria, prospective predictions, ablation tests, and patch tests. If the framework is arbitrarily flexible, show where. DSRP-484 is broad but not general, there is a difference. (See O-theory, Unified Calculus, and DSRP-484 papers as well as the many papers that apply the algorithm experimentally).

2. **“Falsifiers are insufficiently explicit.” False.** One verified irreducible structure outside DSRP-484—a fifth Pattern, ninth element, fifth dynamic, or other residual—breaks the universal claim. (see the many papers that discuss how DSRP-484 is falsified)

3. **“D, S, R, P may be reducible.” Then reduce them.** “Maybe P is indexed D” is speculation, not a refutation. The theory explicitly tests necessity through composition and ablation.

4. **“Mind evidence does not prove reality.” Straw man.** DSRP explicitly separates epistemic and ontological claims and tests them separately. See research questions at dsrpevidence.org

5. **“Rival ontology comparisons may be inaccurate.” Then identify the inaccurate comparison.** A disputed table entry is not evidence against DSRP. More fundamentally, most rival ontologies lack comparable operational protocols, decision rules, mechanisms, or falsification procedures, making symmetric testing impossible without the analyst first constructing their methodology. In other words, they are quite literally too general to be formally tested.

6. **“There is insufficient independent evidence.” False.** The evidence base includes hundreds of cases of independent studies, substantial external use and criticism, unrelated scientific literatures, and independently developed formalisms. “Cabrera authored the synthesis” is not the same as “Cabrera generated the evidence.” (See dsrpevidence.org)

7. **“A perspectival theory cannot make universal claims.” Invalid logic—and almost backwards.** DSRP does not say every thing has the same view. It says organized phenomena are always situated in a point–view relation: a frame of reference. Universality here is not sameness of perspective; it is the recurrence of perspectival structure across scales and sub-systems. Precisely because the universe contains nested and differentiated frames of reference—and its subsystems do too—P is one of the structures that allows DSRP to remain invariant across “sub-universes.” The universal claim is about the recurrence of the point–view form, not about any single privileged viewpoint.

8. **“Universality requires translation into Kant, Kuhn, Wittgenstein, etc.” Category error and appeal to authority.** This confuses the informational content of philosophical frameworks with the structure used to construct them. Kant, Kuhn, and Wittgenstein are themselves organized through DSRP: they make distinctions, assemble systems of concepts, construct relationships among claims, and frame arguments from perspectives. DSRP can structure a false mental model just as easily as a true one. The universality claim concerns the organization of thought, not agreement with its informational content.

9. **“Perspective in nature is anthropomorphic.” Misreads the construct.** P means point-view organization, not consciousness, intention, or subjective opinion. It means "frames of reference." The Cabreras have been making this case against strict perspectival anthropomorphism for 25+ years. (Also, see numerous independent studies that identify perspective functions (point and view structure) in non-human-based nature.)

10. **“DSRP lacks Hegelian internal contradiction.” Scientifically irrelevant and an appeal to authority.** A scientific theory needs empirical vulnerability, not dialectical contradiction. DSRP states exactly how it can fail. More importantly, it is disingenuous to criticize DSRP—which presents itself w

## What they found (results)

Paterson grants that the four patterns are useful as a practical and teaching framework, but argues that the paper's ontological claims do not hold. He says the stated falsification conditions forbid nothing, that DSRP may be necessary for describing the world without being the structure of the world, and that claiming certainty conflicts with DSRP's own teaching that mental models are partial. His summary: the four patterns survive as useful; the paper's account of their metaphysical status does not.

## What they set out to do (purpose)

A blog critique of the 2025 paper DSRP as Universal Ontology that largely constructs a straw man and then attacks it. The paper itself is a broad conceptual synthesis, not a stand-alone technical specification of the entire theory. Paterson nevertheless treats it as though it were representative of the full 30-year DSRP research program, rather than reading it in the context of the broader publication record in which DSRP-484 is formally defined, operationalized, tested, falsified in principle, and developed across multiple empirical and theoretical studies. The result is a critique aimed less at DSRP as actually published than at an incomplete representation of it.

These researchers were not testing DSRP. The finding is theirs; the correspondence to DSRP is drawn by this site.
